$100, refundable, and no dealer anywhere in the process.
Buying a Scout is meant to work the way buying a Rivian does: reserve online, configure when your turn comes, pay the price Scout publishes, take delivery from Scout. More than 150,000 people have put down the deposit. Dealer associations are in court trying to force a franchise model on top of it. Here is how the reservation works and where the fight stands.
The line, by the numbers.

Why there is no Scout dealer, and who is suing about it
Scout’s plan is the one Tesla pioneered and Rivian copied: the company sells the vehicle itself, online, at one published price, and runs its own studios for test drives and its own service points for repairs. There is no franchised dealer taking a margin, adding accessories at the desk, or marking the truck up over sticker in a tight year. For a buyer that is the appeal.
The complication is that Scout is owned by Volkswagen Group, and Volkswagen sells through franchised dealers. State franchise laws in much of the country bar a manufacturer from competing with its own dealers. The National Automobile Dealers Association sued Volkswagen and Scout in February 2025 on that theory, and Volkswagen and Audi dealer groups in California and Florida filed suits under their states’ laws. In October 2026 a California court declined to revisit a ruling that went against Scout; Scout and Volkswagen said they would not back down from direct sales.
What it means for a reservation holder: nothing yet. Scout is taking reservations and planning deliveries on the direct model. If a state forces a change, the most likely shape is a Scout-run or Scout-affiliated delivery point rather than an independent dealer, but that is a guess and the cases are unresolved. Watch your state.

- Place in line
- A reservation is a place in the queue, which is why the deposit is worth placing early even with the delivery date uncertain. Confirm current terms, including how switching between Terra and Traveler works, with Scout.

Questions
Questions people ask
How do I reserve a Scout Terra?
At scoutmotors.com, with a $100 refundable deposit. You choose Terra or Traveler and, as a preference, battery-only or Harvester; the deposit is the same either way. The reservation holds a place in line and does not lock a price or a build.
Is the Scout reservation refundable?
Yes. Scout describes the $100 deposit as fully refundable.
How many people have reserved a Scout?
More than 150,000 as of October 2026, per CEO Scott Keogh, up from more than 50,000 in January 2025. About 85 percent chose the Harvester.
Will Scout have dealers?
No. Scout plans to sell directly to buyers online and through its own retail studios and service points, with Scout owning the relationship and the price. That is the model Tesla and Rivian use.
Why are dealers suing Scout?
Franchise laws in many states bar a manufacturer from selling direct in competition with its franchised dealers. The National Automobile Dealers Association sued Volkswagen Group and Scout in February 2025, and Volkswagen and Audi dealers in California and Florida filed suits under state law, arguing that Scout, as a Volkswagen company, is bound by those laws. Rulings have gone against Scout in some steps, as in California in October 2026, and Scout has said it will not back down from direct sales.
What happens to my reservation if Scout has to use dealers?
Nothing Scout has announced. If Scout were forced into a dealer model in some states, the likeliest outcome is that buyers in those states take delivery through a Scout-affiliated point rather than an independent franchise. That is speculation; the cases are not resolved.
Can I reserve from Canada?
Yes. Scout takes reservations in the United States and Canada. The under-$60,000 price target is stated for the U.S. only.

The Carolina Auto Program puts you in a Jeep Gladiator, a Ram 1500 Rebel or a Silverado Trail Boss for five and a half hours on the Carova 4x4 beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, no salesperson aboard, for $325. Then a no-haggle price in writing from a program dealer. If you want to know what a body-on-frame truck with lockers does in soft sand before the Terra ships, that is the closest thing there is.
Book a beach drive at carolinaautoprogram.comHear when a Scout reaches the beach. Scout sells direct, so a Terra drive would come through Scout, and nothing is arranged yet.
